This request has come up several times. We hear you. We are considering it. This forum is meant to encourage public discussion and we’d like to keep moving in that direction. We are also concerned with the safety and privacy of our members, particularly those that may be under 18.

I would think that it would be even less of a problem here than on dA or YouTube, and PM systems are available on both sites.

That under 18 thing really is an issue. I’m going to stop nagging ‘em.

Yeah, it is an issue. Plus, I’d rather be above the board about my identity, instead of hiding behind a PM system. I’ve posted my e-mail address here, which means I’m willing to sacrifice my privacy… but the flip side of that is that anyone e-mailing me also by default sacrifices their privacy, or at the very least entrusts their privacy to me. And meanwhile, anyone choosing to maintain their privacy can do so by NOT e-mailing. A PM feature would upset that arrangement, come to think of it.

Finix, one problem with this site being small is that it’s actually easier to “attack someone behind the toolshed”, so to speak. The lack of a PM feature mitigates that, and helps reinforce the idea that we need to watch out for each other.

I now agree wholeheartedly with you, SC. The Admin wants to keep it public, I think some of your reasoning is also theirs and both of you are sound in that reasoning. I will republish my email in today’s daily thread (12/31/07).

I agree that a PM system is probably not in our best interests here…
